Economics

1. Classical and Scholastic usage. The term that names the division of moral philosophy that studies the nature, principles, and structures of the family. The term is seldom used in this sense today. 2. Modern usage. The discipline in the modern social sciences that studies the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.  A general sense of “economy” is sometimes distinguished from a more specific sense of “political economy” subservient to political rule.
