Atomism

(also called Mechanism) The doctrine according to which all bodies are wholly constituted by material elements (atoms) the same in substance but differing in shape, with the attributes of compound bodies resulting from the interaction of these elements. So defined, atomism is a version of materialism and shares the materialist understanding of matter.  Historically there have been various forms of atomism, whether in classical or modern philosophical writers.
