Substance

1. Primary Substance (also called First Substance). That which is apt to existence in itself, i.e., apart from other things. The word “substance” used without a modifier typically denotes primary substance. 2. Secondary Substance (also called Second Substance). Essence or universal form existing in cognition.  3. In general usage, “substance” refers to the essence of something under discussion, in distinction from its accidents.
