That which provokes a feeling of awe or, in some respect, terror in a person. Some philosophers hold that the sublime is a species of beauty but others deny this. There is a range of views as to whether the sublime is objective, subjective, or both but in different respects. Lofty mountain peaks, thunderstorms, and the Great Pyramid of Giza are typical examples of the sublime.
