Friendship

A relationship between persons in which each wills the good of the other and is aware of the reciprocation. More succinctly, it is reciprocated goodwill and awareness of the reciprocation. In the Aristotelian understanding of friendship, persons who are friends in the truest sense will the good of the other because of the other’s goodness and for the other’s own sake. Friendships with a different basis for the reciprocated goodwill, such as utility or pleasure, are friendships of a lesser kind.
